Pippin: "I didn't think it would end this way..."
Gandalf: "End?"
Gandalf: "No, the journey doesn't end here."
Gandalf: "Death is just another path...One that we all must take."
Gandalf: "The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all change to silver glass..."
Gandalf: "...And then you see it."
Pippin: "What? Gandalf? ...See what?"
Gandalf: "White shores...and beyond."
Gandalf: "The far green country under a swift sunrise."
Pippin: "Well, that isn't so bad."..
Gandalf: "No...No it isn't."

Return of The King 2003
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty, well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming --WHEW-- What a Ride!!!" -Author unknown

This part of text from Tolkien has always bothered me.
For if you read his writings on the afterlife in Middle Earth, you find that not all beings are going to "heaven." The "immortal" beings like the wizards and elfs, etc. were destined to arrive on the white shores and green country after their physical existence was ended.
But for the lesser beings, like men and hobbits, etc., they simply ceased to exist. No shores and country for them. So here the wise and gracious Gandalf is talking about a place that poor Pippin will never see. Talk about your false hopes!!! Bad Gandalf...baaad.

However,
Bilbo and Frodo are able to go. Maybe because they caught the last ship over. I'm going to pretend that Tolkien just "happened" to leave the part out about EVERYBODY having the opportunity to go. So...uh...there.
Well, Im not sure Grandma is on the white shores b/c she always like the mountains better!!
in a van...down by the river....
Yes, you are correct, Horse Talker.
Biblo and Frodo are allowed to travel over the sea to be with the Anan and live out immortality. Tolkien said that this was an exception because these two hobbits had been truly humble and given a sacrifice that no one else could have and thus they (along with Bilbo who also carried the burden of the ring for years) should be rewarded above all other mortal creatures.
But Gandalf was still stickin' it to Pippin ;-)

Ok, Yes. I finally agree. Merry and Pippin almost got eaten by an Oliphant...or whatever. And they completely deserved to go. I think they should write a harsh letter to whom it may concern and voice their upsetedness about this conundrum. Oh, wait, this happened about a thousand years ago. They've been stuck. But if it were The Neverending Story a timeline wouldn't be a problem.
It also wouldn't be a problem if they would just hop into their spacecraft and do a slingshot thingy around the sun and go back in time (but NOT pick up any humpback whales - it's already been done)...

Trekkie for life
Yeah, I saw that one. However, I like the Nemesis one better. Even though swimming with whales is cool and all I just don't think that deep space is the place to do it.
p.s.- have you seen the Trekkies movie. It's one of my favorites. Now they have a Trekkies #2.
Are you a Trekkie or a Trekker
Yes, I have seen the Trekkies movei but have not seen #2.
As for Trekkie vs. Trekker, I'm not sure I know what the difference is?
